FIRE DAMAGES HOUSE
Kitchen Gutted
Severe damage was caused yesterday to a house ait 21 Ryeland avenue. Upper Riccarton, the property of Mrs E. Anderson, by a fire which is believed to have started shortly before 1 p.m. The fire brigade received a call at 1.22 p.m. and one unit from the Central Fire Station and one from the Sockburn Fire Station attended. When they arrived the rear of the bouse was burning fiercely. The alarm was given by neighbours. The fire appeared to have started in the kitchen of the house, which is only two years old, and this room was gutted. Destroyed In it were a refrigerator, an electric oven, an electric mixer and other items of kitchen equipment and kitchen furniture.
The dining alcove was badly damaged as was furniture in it. The sitting room was also badly damaged, the walls and ceiling being charred and blackened and furniture damaged. The bedrooms at the front of-, the house were damaged by smoke and the plaster in the walls and ceilings were cracked. At the rear of the house the wall near the kitchen was partly destroyed, and a fence near the same side of the house was damaged. Mrs Anderson’s schoolboy son was in the house at the time of the fire, but did not notice it until it had a firm hold. When he tried to reach the telephone he was forced back by smoke. The cause of the fire is not yet known. •
