SECOND SHOCK
N. Island Affected (N2. Press Association) wEtXJNGTON, May 10. The two earthquakes which rocked much of New Zealand today do not necessarily indicate that more shocks are Immlnent The Seismological Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research today described the earthquakes as "shallow and moderate.’’
The major shock was registered at a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale at Wellington. It appeared to be seated only r short distance beneath the earth's crust. In Wellington, only a few persons noticed the earthquake, which was felt here about 12.28 p.m. The second shock four hours later, however, sent heavy lights swinging in office buildings and brought displays of canned goods tumbling down in several city shops. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research had not worked out the epicentre of the jolt late this afternoon. It appeared to be seated about 70 miles from the capital, apparently to the north.
In Levin, goods were dislodged from shop shelves after 30 seconds of sharp jolts. The second earthquake was felt over a large area of the southern part of the North Island. Its magnitude was 5.5 bn the Richter scale—compared with the disastrous 1031 Napier jolt ' which reached 7.75.
Reports from different centres varied, but the earthquake was described as "moderate” in Wanganui, “prolonged” in Ohakea, and “slight" in New Plymouth and Masterton.
