SAFE HARBOUR IN GOOD MILE TRIAL
Safe Harbour showed her fitness for her engagement in the main race at Ashburton with a sound mile gallop at Riccarton yesterday. Impressive trialists over shorter sprint distances were Francisco, Royal Leigh. Hush Lady, Newmarket, and the Wingatui-trained Begorrah. The work was done on the No. 1 grass. The ground was soft and cutting out after early-morning rain.
Safe Harbour (A. Palmer) ran a mile in train 47 3-ssec. and the last half attractively in 52sec. Her time for the last half mile was within 2sec of the best half mile sprint of the morning.
Safe Harbour has had a busy season, but appears to be standing up to her programme fairly well.
Francisco (Mrs V. Clutterbuck > sped over half a mile in 50 2-ssec. He has a sharp turn of speed but his recent race performances have been disappointing Royal Leigh ridden by his race rider. O. Anning, recorded 50 3-ssec. and appeared to be coasting for the last few strides. He is one of the logical form prospects for the Coldstream Handicap at Ashburton. Newmarket (R. Thompson).
another Coldstream Handicap candidate, ran seven furlongs, the opening three easily and th* lest# four quickly in 51sec. Hush Lady iM. J. Wildermoth) ran half a mile in 50 4-ssec, and did the job well. Seven furlongs of the Apprentices’ Hack Handicap might be just a little more than she can manage.
BEGORRAH’S RUN Working much later in the morning after much wear and tear on the track, the Wingotuiowned and trained Begorrah (B. E. Kennedy) ran half a mile in 51 3-ssec. Beforehand he was given experience over the pony hurdles. He was tried on the lead and was also ridden. He could be useful as a jumper Begorrah’s etablemate. Believe Me also ridden by Kennedy. worked over a mile, and ran his last half mile in 54 4-ssec. He eould be al) the better for his racing at Blenheim, where he was twice fifth, and eould surprise in the Ashburton County Handicap if the track is heavy. Picca Leigh (B. W. McDonald) went well in her final trial for the Lauriston Two-Year-Old Handicap at Ashburton. After running half a mile in 51 3-ssec she was three lengths clear of her stablemate. Bugs Bunny <R. McDonald). Vesture (W. Beck), another certain to have heavy backing in the Lauriston Handicap, later ran half a mile solo in 53 2-ssec She seemed unsettled before and after she galloped on Tuesday but was altogether different yesterday. Gay Tommy (E. G. Low) was going easily with three-quarters of a length on Sun-end (G. W. Mein) after running a mile in Imin 47 l-ssec. the last half in 52 3-ssec.
Gay Tommy has been bothered with soreness in a leg. but it did not appear to be troubling him during and after this gallop. He will probably be favourite for the Ashburton County Handicap.
Tidal Wave (G. W. Mein) ran a mile in Imin 51 l-ssec. the last half keenlv in 52 3-ssec. He should be all the better for his latest racing and could be hard to beat in the race for hack stavers at Ashburton.
The stablemates Kastanea (T Wilson) and William David (B Collins) ran a mile in Imin 50 1- and the last half in 54 2-
Balance (B. S. Finlayson) led BalaHan (M: J. Wildermoth) and Glenttrkin (A. J. Stokes) over a mile in Imin 51 1-ssec. the last half in 55 2-ssec.
SLUGGISH Glentarkin started several lengths behind the others, but passed the sluggish Bala’lan in the straight and finished in a gap of three lengths behind Balance. Bodkin iR. W. Donovan), goine well under a light weight, led Quick Time (G. R. Baldwin) by a length .finishing a mile in Imin 49 3-ssec. the lasi ha'f in 53 2-ssec. Count fierce (C T. Wilson) shaped as if he would recapture his best race form soon when he beat Nava rone (W. Beck) and Gambol (L. McGuire) over seven furlongs. Count Pierre ran the distance in Imin 35 3-ssec and the last half mile in 52 2-ssec. Other gallops:— Six furlongs: St.ilorman (B. McDonald) and Dig Deep (R McDonald). Imin 22 3-ssec: Mike (J. L. Coulter), Imin 23 3-ssec; Golden Howe (Low) and Crackers (Kempton), Imin 24 3-ssec. Half mile: Last Mate (Palmer) three-quarters of a length to Joyvine (Beck). 52 2-ssec: Methuselah (Browning), 53 3- Montalto (Reriti), 53sec: Certainly (Stokes). 53 2-ssec: Hopeful (B. McDonald), 52 4- Derailment (Kempton), shading Timetan (Low). 52 3-ssec: Marlborough (Beck) and Count Pedro (A. Eastwood). 52 2-ssec; Lady Merling (B. McDonald). 51 l-ssec: Sir Pedro (A.
