NEW CHURCH AT SUMNER

Concrete Walls Erected

The concrete walls of the new Anglican All Saints’ Church have now been erected. The roof has still to be put on and the inside and outside lined with stone. The church may be dedicated towards the end of this year. The new’ church replaces the 84-year-old -wooden building which was demolished in August of last year. It is on the same site, adjacent to the vicarage at 54 Wakefield avenue. It is expected to cost about £28.000 of which the contract price is £25,715 and extra furnishings will cost £2525. It will accommodate approximately 275 persons including the choir, which is about 100 more than the old church. The bell for the new church was that formerly used by the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade and has been given to the ehurch. The architect for the new building is Mr J. A. Hendry And the builder, Mr C. A. Waters.

The outside of the building will be faced by random rubble-stone given from the property of Commander J. C. Elworthy. The inside will be faced with Oamaru stone.

The fund for building the new church was started in 1924 and saving has continued, for 37 years. The vicar <Mr T. C. Johnston) said that it had been necessary to borrow only £5500 for the new church.
