A MAN-MADE CLOUD 65 MILES HIGH.—The cloud of ice crystals formed at an altitude of 65 miles after the launching of a United States Saturn rocket recently. The rocket was deliberately destroyed after cut-off of the booster engines. The cloud spread to a diameter of eight to 10 miles within two or three seconds of the explosion. It was formed by the release of 95 tons of water carried as ballast. The experiment, named Project High Water, was to study the effect of a large dispersal of water upon the upper atmosphere and ionosphere.
