ARMS FOR INDONESIA
Agreement In Moscow
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) MOSCOW, May 8.
The Soviet Union and Indonesia signed an agreement in Moscow today for the supply of more Soviet arms to Indonesia, the Indonesian Foreign Minister (Dr. Subandrio) announced. An Indonesian delegation spokesman said he could give no details of the weapons bought, but added: “They will be more than enough to face the growing open arms threats from the Dutch in West Irian.” Dr. Subandrio made the announcement about the arms deal at a reception after the signing of the agreement. He said the Indonesian people were faced with “tasks of vast size to free its territory from the influence of imperialism and colonialism.” The Soviet Foreign Minister (Mr Gromyko), asked by reporters at the reception whether the agreement provided for more or less arms than last year’s multi-million deal, replied: “Just right.” Asked if the amount would be sufficient to enable Indonesia to take West New Guinea, he said: ‘‘l would prefer not to say anything on this ... we favour the position of Indonesia.”
Dr. Subandrio had a twohour meeting with Mr Khrushchev before a farewell luncheon for the delegation.
