TWINS LEAD DEBUTANTES AT VILLA MARIA BALL

Twin sisters. Misses Jane and Susan Parish, led the 26 debutantes who were presented to the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce) at the Villa Maria College Old Giris’ Association ball last evening in the Winter Garden.

The girls moved up a garden walk for their presentaion. Tapestry designed walls, decorated with trails of ivy, ended in a pedestal from which each debutante received a posy from her partner.

Before the ball, debutantes visited die sisters at Villa Maria College. On arrival guests were received by the association’s president (Miss Colleen Ive).

Those presented were: Misses Jane and Susan Parish, who wore identical gowns. Francis O’Connell. Marlene Goodman. Barbara Morris, Marie Therese Simmonds. Barbara McCarthy Heather Trewern,’ Clare Dalton, Diane Green, Valerie Steer*. Julia Pamham, Margaret Butts. Susan Gorman. Ann Merrifield, Maureen Bamford, Leslie Shepheard. Barbara Moore, Suzanne Kavanagh, Irene Gregan. Gillian McCarthy. Patricia O'Halloran, Christine Wilkins. Edwina Sloan, Leonie McCartin. and Treisha Ghent. Debutants were presented to Bishop Joyce by Miss Ivc Her gown of parchment French re-embroidered lace with a bell-shaped skirt fitting bodice featured a bateau neckline and slim fitting sleeves

The acting vice-president. Miss Colleen Connor, chose apple green crystalette tor her gown. The front skirt panels fell from a plain fitting bodice, while the back featured tiny hidden pleats to create a flowing fullness The ball secretary. Miss Kathryn Ryall. wore a gown of flame delustred satin featured a ballet-top oodice with bell-shaped skirt caught at the hem with self-made bows.

Specially invited guests included Bishop Joyce, the Rt. Rev. T. Hanrahan, the Very Rev. G. Kane, the Rev B. -J. O'Brien. S.M (representing St Bede's College), the Rev. G. McGinty. SJ. representing the Holy Name Seminary, the Very Rev J J O'Sullivan and the Rt Rev Victor Foley. Roman Catholic Bishop of Fiji. Associations represented were:—The Dominican College Ex-pupils’ Association. Sacred Heart College. Timaru Old Giris' Association. St Mary’s College Old Girls' Association. St. Margaret’s College Old Girls' Association. Villa Maria College ParentTeacher Association. Members of the ball committee included Mesdames P. J. Keenan, M. T. Bunting, U Leonard, M. Cowden, P. Howard, E. Quinn, J. Butler, L. Quinlivan, J. Kennedy and N. Williamson, and Misses C. Connor, K. Ryall, J O’Brien and A. Brown.

About 400 persons were present.
