TROTTING El Adem And Adioway For Double At Oamaru
El Adem and Adioway could be the winning doubles combination at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. Both horses will be opposed by unwieldy fields, but their recent form has been such that they are expected to overcome this difficulty.
El Adem will be one of seven horses on 12 yards behind a line of 12 on the front in the first leg, the two-mile R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap. El Adem, a member of G. Cameron’s New Brighton team, has had 11 starts for two wins and four placings, a record on which he should improve in the next week or two.
El Adem's wins include the Waimate Cup in December, but one ol his placings was probably an even better effort. That was in the Cheviot Cup in March when he finished second to Kyle View after beginning slowly. A week later at Methven he beat all but Safe Beturn over 10 furlongs, again after being slow early. Both of those placings were grand efforts and they entitle him to serious consideration in this field. Cairnbrae is a highlyregarded member of W E. Lowe’s Hinds team. He had his first start since September in the recent Waikouaiti Cup. No line could be gained on his immediate prospects as he lost his driver in a skirmish early in the race. Cairnbrae was reported to be well forward before that race so that if the incident had no ill effects, he could go close to making amends in this race.
Tfae Balclutha pacer, Stormlight, will only have to raoe up to his second to Raft at Forbury Park last Saturday to be one of the brighter prospects He was not pulled out until late in the run home and failed by only half a head to catch the winner Stormlight has shown marked improvement in recent weeks and another bold showing is expected from him. If the track becomes soft, be will handle the conditions better than most in the race. Arriaga won twice at Greymouth last month at her most recent starts. The Garrison Hanover mare has shown stamina in her races and she could be in at the finish. Estimation will also have prospects. The brother to Overdrive has had three recert wins on the West Coast The richer company he Will
meet at Oamaru might not stop him making another bold showing. Finished Well Throwaway, which has shown fine form on soft tracks, finished boldly for fifth on the firm Forbury Park last Saturday. The Stormyway gelding appeals as a likely stayer. Robyn, a winner at W’aikouaiti, Bonnieburn, Jolly Hal and Hancove are others expected to race well. Adioway, an easy winner at Stratford a week earlier, was not disgraced when beaten by Dyson on a soft track at the Taranaki meeting last week. He will have a chance to make amends in the 10-, furlong C. L. Ayson Handicap, the second leg of Saturday’s double. Adioway has drawn reasonably well at No. 12 on the
front line and if he begins as well as usual, he should be close to the lead throughout and much too speedy for the others over the final furlong. Peel, a stablemate of Cairnbrae, has not really paced a race this season. He was a narrow winner at Waikouaiti at his most recent start. He looks to be favourably drawn at No. 6 at the barrier and he should be the hardest for Adiowaiy to beat. Seafield Lady is not a consistently good beginner, but she got away well in the Peninsula Handicap at Forbury Park last week. It was only in the last furlong that Darkie Hanover mastered her. Seafield Lady will have bright prospects over the sprint distance of this race I and it will not surprise if she wins. Vivacis did well to deadheat for second with Seafield Lady at Forbury Park after 'being well back for most of the race. She is not a very reliable beginner, but provided she does not lose too much ground in the first furlong, she should be close up The Hal Tryax mare, Lynrobin, has paced useful races at times this season, being at her best over sprint distances She is a member of D Todd’S Mataura team and she could easily upset calculations. Halyard, Lucky Helen, Smog and Smokey Hall appeal most of the others, bujt they will be hard-pressed to extend Adioway if the latter is produced near his peak. Death Of Mr G. Mouritz The death occurred in Christchurch on Monday of Mr G Mouritz. who for more than 30 years was a trotting trainer and driver in Canterbury. Mr Mouritz was born in Australia and he came to New Zealand more than 30 years ago He "Was private trainer to Sir John McKenzie for a time and while with him he trained and drove Taxpayer to win the New Zealand Derby Stakes. Wild • Guy and Supertax were two other fine winners he produced when training at Addington. In partnership with Mr C Campbell, he bred a number of winners, including Petite Yvonne, one of the best mares raced in New Zealand in the last 10 years. Fair’s Fair Colt For Riccarton The two-year-old colt by Fair’s Fair from the Ameri-can-bred mare Happy Jou’ney has been bought by two Greymouth businessmen. Messrs J F Pegley and L. S Robertson, for an undisclosed figure. He is to enter the Riccarton stable of I. McClure. The colt was bred by Mr W. Fisher at the Ra Ora Stud, Panmure. His new owners have- both raced horses on the West Coast. Mr’Rdbertson’s last winner was Dark Arrow and more recently Mr Pegley raced the hack Befana. Acceptor At Otaki Golden Dreamer (16) 7-7 is ! an additional acceptor in the i Ta Timl Kara Handicap, the first leg of the double at Otaki on Saturday. Golden Dreamer was omitted in error by the Otaki Maori Racing Club from the acceptances on Monday evening.
