RACING > BRIGHT CORAL TOO GOOD AT LEVIN

“Th* Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, May 9. The four-y ear-old Bright Coral, which ran two mediocre races at Woodville and Feilding after a surprise win in the Taranaki Cup last month, finished too strongly for his 14. opponents in the President’s Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Levin meeting today.

Ridden by L. K. Tinsley, Bright Coral was again at good odds, paying £l5 16s and £4 19s. He was several places back at the turn, but finished resolutely to beat Outcome by a length, with Harsh a neck away third. Bright Coral is raced by the Hawera trainer, B. K. Hart. The Feilding trainer, I. Tinsley, has had charge of the horse for the last three weeks, and may continue to train him for a while.

Harsh tried to lead all the way and was followed in the early part by Earl Robin. Outcome, Arid. Faultless. Red Anthony and Bright Coral, then El Ganador, Teneriffe and Gold Find, with Aequitas at the rear.

Earl Robin gave ground on the top turn, where Arid, El Ganador and Teneriffe had improved. When they turned for home Harsh led by a length from Outcome. Teneriffe. Arid, El Ganador and Bright Coral. Outcome had charge starting the last furlong, but Bright Coral came with a strong run on the outside and w’on going away. Outcome held second narrowly from Harsh and Aequitas finished brilliantly from the tail of the field for a close fourth.

El Ganador was running on

fifth after covering a lot of extra ground throughout the race. The best of the others were Dowdex. Stitch. Teneriffe, Faultless and Arid. Beat Sprinters Prince Monolulu. which had raced indifferently in five starts since winning at the Napier Park meeting in March, won the second leg; the Stewards' Handicap, at good odds and returned a double with Bright Coral of £371 Ils.

Prince Monolulu paid £2C 6s 6d and £5,10s 6d when he beat That's That and the favourite Cabriere.

Knobby tried to lead all the way and he was closely trailed in the run to the straight by Cabriere. Prince Monolulu. Red Signal. Yeti, Smoky Bay, That's That and

Beech Park, whieh had begun slowly. Cabriere soon took the measure of Knobby but a little farther on he started to tire under his 9-9 and Prince Monolulu headed him at the half-furlong.

Prince Monolulu carried on to win by a short length and That’s That came from behind to head Cabriere on the post for second. Smoky Bay was fourth, followed by Beech Park, Red Signal, Spiborough, Grit, Wishing and Yeti. The weather was fine and mild. The track was dead at the start but improved for the later races. On-course the totalisator handled a total of £46,596 10s. compared with £38,548 last year.
