Five Killed In Road Accidents

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 20

Five lives have been lost in traffic accidents throughout New Zealand since the Easter holiday week-end officially started at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Mr J. C. C. Edwards, Traffic Superintendent for New Zealand, said he was shocked to learn that four of the accidents had occurred during the recognised danger hours —6 p.m. and 8 p.m.—on the first day of the holiday week-end.

The Easter deaths had occurred in spite of good weather and good driving throughout the country, said a Transport Department spokesman. He added that traffic has been heavy. Although the department had not gathered enough information yet. reix>rts showed many persons had been badly I injured in car accidents. There have be -n at least ■ three multiple collisions. Fatal Collision

An Englishman, who intended to return to London I within the next lew weeks. Iwas killed in a collision near ■Otematata early last night. He : was Harry Richard Round, aged 41, married, a waggon greaser, of Otematata. Returning to O'-’matata from Omarama. the car which Mr Round was driving collided with a five-ton truck at Sailor's Cutting, eight miles west of Otematata. about 7 p.m. The right-hand front mudguards of the two vehicles met and the car crashed on into the front edge of the tray of the truck. Neither the driver of the truck. Donald Walter Ross, a farmer, of Ben Dnu station. Omarama. nor his father, who I was travelling with him. was injured Mr Round was alone in his car It is understood that Mr Round had been living in New Zealand lor several years His wife returned to the UrtHed Kingdom about six months ago. and is now 'iving in Clapham. London Mr Round intended ‘o rejoin her in London within a few weeks. Three-Car Accident I A man was killed and two persons were injured in a three-car accident on the Blenheim-Picton highway near Koromiko about 730 pin. yesterday. The man killed was:

Roger Lawrence Hance, aged 59. a retired baker, of Picton.

Those injured were: Beni Lynne Hance, his wife, who suffered lacerations and bruises. Her condition was reported today as fairly satisfactory.

Michael John Cotton, aged 22. of Nelson, m.ld concussion. He was discharged from hospital. Mr and Mrs Hance were travelling towards Blenheim ■in a car. The other two (vehicles were a light van.

driven by Birges Jeppersscs of Tahunanui. Nelson, who had his wife as a passenger, and a light car.driven by Clive James Smith, of Nelson, who had three passengers. Mr and Mrs Hance weir thrown out of their car on to the road. The injured were taken to Wairau Hospitafi. Child Killed

A five-year-oli boy killed when struck by a ca at Bay View, about five miles north of Napier, at 6.30 p.m yesterday. He was Trevor Stevens W'ineti. son of Mr and M.-s Alexander Wineti, of Bay View Boy Killed By Car A boy who was struck by a car in Commerce street. Frankton, at 11.20 a.m. today, died soon after his admission to the Waikato Hospital. He was Dennis Henry Leong, aged two. son of Mr and Mrs A. W. Leong, of Hamilton. The boy had got out of a car and was crossing the road to his uncle's shop.

Three Injured

A mother and two children received serious injuries when a utility vehicle in which they were passengeroverturned on the settlement hill near Owaka at 5 15 p.m on Thursday. They are Mir Hilda Wilson, aged 28. AnnMarie Wilson, aged three, and Peter William Wilson, aged 14 months. Mrs Wilson received multiple injuries, and the Balclutha Hospital tonight described her condition as ser - ous. The two children both received head injuries and were taken from Balelu'ha Hospital to Wakari Hospital. Dunedin. The condition of both children tonight was satisfactory.
