INJURIES TO ACCUSED
Withdrawal Of Allegation (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 20. Peter Keith Shortland, aged 17, alias Joseph Henry, has “unreservedly withdrawn” his allegation that four policemen beat him up in the cells of the Auckland Central Police Station on the night of April 13. Shortland alleged he had been manhandled by the police when he appeared before Mr A. A. Coates, S.M., last Saturday charged with drunkenness.
The Magistrate demanded a report from the police, which he received today. Shortland called at the Central Station on Monday and voluntarily made a statement withdrawing his charges against the police. He said he had been told by friends how he got bruises on the left side of his head and a gashed lip while scuffling with friends before his arrest.
He had only “htjzy memories” of what happened on the nigiht in question, and “honestly thought I got the injuries when I had a blue with a constable in the cells.”
