(N-Z.P.4.-Reuter —Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 19 Fire destroyed the Village Theatre, new headquarters of the Australian National Memorial Theatre, at Toorak. a Melbourne suburb, yesterday. The fire broke out about 3.30 a.m. and raged for two hours and a half. Only the brick walls are standing, but these will have to be pulled down because they are now unsafe. The building, a former picture theatre, cost the Australian National Memorial Theatre £45.000 to acquire last year. It has spent thousands more on renovations. The theatre was to have opened for its first stage show, a musical, in about four weeks. Auditions for the musical were held there on Wednesday
The chairman of the theatre’s trust b;ard. Sir Robert Knox, said the theatre was a total loss and a new theatre would be built on the site.
