BARNES DANCE TRAFFIC
Difficulties At Peak Periods
Under very heavy traffic conditions difficulties were being experienced with the Barnes dance, system on the Colombo street - Gloucester street intersection, said the Christchurch Citv Council traffic engineer (Mr H. E Surtees) on Thursday.
Because it was the last shopping day before Easter, traffic on Thursday was the heaviest since 'he system was introduced on April 2 Under such peak conditions motorists were subject to severe delays but pedestrians were offered a convenience they did not have with the old system, said Mr Surtees The delays were causing more inconvenience on intersections nearby than on the one controlled by the new system. Traffic was backing up Colombo street across Armagh street It wa- the intention of the council that the lights on Armstrong’s corner be manually operated in an effort to avoid this, said Mr Surtees At peak periods on Thursday a traffic officer wi*h a loud hailer was stationed on the Gloucester street corner telling’ motorists and pedestrians how to use the system Mr Surtees said that at nor. mal times the system worked very well
The new system was only installed for a trial period, said Mr Surtees. Eventually the traffic committee would
review the situation and make recommendations to trie council.
