France, leading 5-0 at halftime. fully deserved its victory, although its customary open play was only seen in spasms against a spirited Irish team. Ireland had Hewitt as a limping passenger on the wing for most of the second half, and after 81 minutes lost the full-back Gilpin, who went off with concussion. France has won the title four successive seasons. Tlie Irish surprised a crowd of about 30,000 by holding its opponents to only five points in the face of a strong first half win.
