Ireland Loses In Paris (N.Z.P-A.-Reuter —Copyright) PARIS, April 14. France retained the international Rugby Union championship with an 11-0 win over an injury-hit Ireland at ColOmbes Stadium today. France, leading 5-0 at halftime. fully deserved its victory, although its customary open play was only seen in spasms against a spirited Irish team. Ireland had Hewitt as a limping passenger on the wing for most of the second half, and after 81 minutes lost the full-back Gilpin, who went off with concussion. France has won the title four successive seasons. Tlie Irish surprised a crowd of about 30,000 by holding its opponents to only five points in the face of a strong first half win.
Touring Team Defeated (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, April 15. The New Zealand Sub-Union Rugby team, Tauranga. was beaten 8-3 by the powerful Australian Barbarian side today. The light-weight New Zealand team gave the Barbarians. containing nine Australian internationals, a stern tussle, scoring a try in the opening moments of the game and clinging tenaciously to the lead for another 50 minutes. The Barbarians went ahead with a try by test five-eighths Dowse, converted by the fullback, Smee, and seven minutes from the end Smee kicked a penalty goal.
Australian Captain Hurt <N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, April 15. The Australian captain and scrum-half K. Catchpole, may miss the Al] Blacks’ series in Australia because of injury. Catchpole, who has a tom hamstring musete, may be out of action for another five weeks. The Australian Rugby Union has appointed 63-year-old B. Palmer national coach for the All Blacks’ series.
