RACING El Ganador Favoured For Nelson First Leg

In the absence of Compensate, die Awapuni galloper, El Ganador, looks likely to start a firm favourite in the £lOOO Nelson Cup, main event and first leg of the double on the first day of the Nelson Jockey Club’s annual meeting tomorrow. This five-year-old finished last at Awapuni last month, but he covered extra ground on that occasion and so had some excuse.

Earlier he had strong form, including a win over 11 furlongs at Masterton, and his supporters are unlikely to forget his second to Quite Able in the Manawatu Cup at Christmas time.

Canterbury stables will probably provide the strongest opposition for E! Ganador.

The Orari stablemates, Persuasive and Jtilloch. both look good chances and so does the Washdyke galloper. Night Sock. Last Link, the Riccarton gelding, which would have been one of Canterbury’s strongest entrants, will not run.

Persuasive might be the closest to El Ganador at the finish. This Targui mare was a winner over a mile at Wingatui on March 10 and has been placed twice in three starts since.

Last time out, Persuasive dead-heated for second with Gay Tommy only a head behind Personify at Ashburton.

The chance of Julloch, a dual winner at Omoto last week-end. may depend on how the race is run.

Julloch is a speedy type and if the race is run at a solid pace all the way, the others might have too much stamina for him.

However, if the early pace is slow, and the race develops into a sprint home, Julloch’s speed should keep him right up with the leaders in the final stages. Night Sock, on the other hand, is a staying type and his chances will be best if the pace is solid all the way. A better prospect than

these two might be another Awapuni galloper. Teneriffe. Teneriffe could not manage better than eighth in the high-weight on the second day at Awapuni last month, but he was an easy winner in similar company on the first day. Last month Teneriffe was just beaten by the good performer, Corador, in a strong hack field at Trentham. Three horses, including two from the North Island —had been scratched from the Nelson Cup yesterday afternoon. They were Compensate, from Waikouaiti, Uniflow. from Otaki. and Faultless, from Awapuni.

Two were scratched also from the second leg and open sprint, the Newman Handicap—Gay
