The Eye
Sight. By Roy O. Scholl. Hodder and Stoughton. 192 pp.
Dr. Scholz has written an interesting and easily understandable guide for laymen on the medical aspects of vision. He covers a wide range of topics including chapters on the basic structure of the eye, the eye examinations, contact lenses, ocular diseases, children's eyes and the blind and partially sighted. This book will be of use to a good many people such as employers, teachers, persons suffering from ocular disorders and the families of such persons who wish to obtain easily digested information on the subject. At no point does the author talk down to his readers or malign their ignorance. Instead he spends much of his time explaining the reasons for the good advice that he has given. At the same time he effectively dispels a great many of the fallacies, doubts and misconceptions which are always associated with any common medical disorder such as defective sight Unfortunately, Dr. Scholz has a precocious habit of repeating himself and this tends towards the end of the book to detract from its enjoyment but some readers mayi find this a better technique!
than referring back to technical descriptions already given in the text
The clarity of presentation could probably have been improved slightly by the inclusion of more diagrams and tables, but those that are presented are of an extremely high quality. The publishers should be congratulated on beginning this series of medical Handbooks for Laymen and one hopes that the present two books in the series, "Sight” and “Your Heart.” will soon be followed by others. i
