Father Of 12 Drowned

WHAKATANE. April 6.

The father of 12 children was drowned early this afternoon when he and his two fishing companions were thrown from their 12ft dinghy as they attempted to guide the boat through the treacherous Whakatane heads. He was Tom Kingi, aged about 45. of Paroa. Whakatane. As Kingi and his two companions. Henry Kingi and William Maunsell. approched the heads the boat was swamped in rough waters and al! were thrown out. Henry Kingi and Maunsell managed to swim ashore, but Tom Kingi disappeared. The survivors notified the police on reaching the shore. Although two fishing boats trawled the area for four hours they were unable to recover the body.
