Completion In 1965

WELLINGTON, April 6. Completion of the Haast Pass road was planned for 1965, the chief engineer of the National Roads Board (Mr A. G. Begg* said today Last night, the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, during discussions of the road, found its members' estimates of the completion date ranged from 1964 to 1967 Mr Begg said the main jobs necessary for completion of the road were: building the bridge across the Haast river near its mouth (which was already under way), 20 miles of road formation and bridging the Blue river "The road at present runs to just north of the flue river We have to get down the banks of this river, bridge it, and then cross four or five miles of very rough country—all bluffs and ridges - before we reach the sandhills north of the Haast itself,” said Mr Begg The Haast bridge would be completed in 18 months to two years.
