TEACHING OF MAORI

Debate Offer Accepted

( N.Z. Press Association)

GISBORNE. April 5.

The offer of Dr. Bruce Biggs, of Auckland University. to debate publicly his methods of teaching the Maori language has been accepted by Mr H. T. Reedy, of Ruatoria. who has expressed a preference for Ngamawahia marae as a suitable venue. On March 11 at Ruatoria. Mr Reedy addressed the Minister of Maori affairs (Mr Hanan) ’ and said that Dr. Biggs was “murdering and mutilating'’ the Maori language by his teaching methods.

Mr Reedy said today that the teaching of Maori had been a subject of complaint for two or three years. He hoped to achieve acceptance by the authorities, if not by Dr. Briggs, of continued use of the timehonoured written forms which had been handed down from the earliest day of Maori contacts with Europeans. said Mr Reedy.
