TOURISTS’ WANTS

N.Z. Lack Of Facilities

( N,Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 5.

“New Zealand is probably the worst. country in the world for looking after tourists, The people here are wonderful and the country is beautiful, but nobody seems to realise that the tourist business is the world’s biggest industry,” said Mr J. M. Ferris, one of a number of Canadian travel agents making a brief tour of the country.

He said the American tourist most liked to sit on a bar stool and talk to people. The law here stopped him from doing that. He could talk to other people staying in the same hotel, but that was not what he wanted. “He wants to meet local people, not other tourists,” said Mr Ferris. “Maybe he wants to meet a girt It’s difficult to do that here.” Tourism was on the upswing in the South Pacific, Mr Ferris said, and New Zealand should make sure it got full benefit from it.
