TRIAL ENDS IN CUBA
Hard Penalties Urged
(N 2J B A .-Reuter—Copyright) HAVANA April 4.
The State prosecutor has demanded severe penalties for 1179 persons accused of taking part in the abortive invasion of Cuba a year ago. The trial, in Havana, ended last evening. Sentences will be pronounced latex. The prosecutor (Dr. Santiago Cubes) said the prisoners were guilty of a crime against the stability and integrity of the nation and against the powers of the state.
The law provided punishment ranging from 20 years’ imprisonment to death by firing squad, he said. The defending lawyer. Dr. Antonio Cejas, asked for a "generous sentence . . . the victory of the Cuban people over imperialism at Playa Giron (scene of the invasion) was just and generous.” Western reporters were excluded from the trial.
Later broke out in Havana between supporters of the Castro Government and relatives of prisoners awaiting the sentences.
About 300 Communists shouting “Fidel, Fidel” and pro-Castro slogans used force to break up a “death watch’’ outside the Principe Prison
