DUTY-FREE SHOPS
Discussion On Difficulties
New Zealand’s first dutyfree gift shop should open at the Christchurch international airport soon, Cr. A. R Guthrey, chairman of the City Council’s airport committee, said yesterday after discussions with a senior officer of the Civil Aviation Administration.
Permission was given by the Government some months ago for the shop to open, but then technical difficulties arose with the Treasury, the Reserve Bank and the Customs Department. Cr. Guthrey and the airport manager (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) have since been to Wellington to discuss the difficulties.
One difficulty was that under the law once a traveller had passed through the Customs he was entitled to have only £7 in New Zealand currency. Another objection had been to the use of travellers’ cheques, bui Cr. Guthrey said yesterday tfiat he understood this objection had been withdrawn, and that overseas currency would also be accepted at the shop
