Magistrate’s Court Suspended Sentence For Man On Assault Charge
Allan Matheson Bishop, aged 33. a carpet layer, p.eaded guilty when he appeared before Mr E A. Lee SM. in tne Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of assault on April 5 Bishop was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence in six months if called on.
Sergeant E. S. Tuck said that at 125 am. yesterday the attention at a constable at the Ara mi: motor camp was drawn to a woman screaming and people milling about in an area of the camp grounds. The constable saw the accused throw a woman to the ground The constable, wa the aid of another man, pulled the accused aw-ay from the woman. The accused was furiously excited and struck out wtiile he was being held It was then he assaulted the man who was assisting the constable, and tnis man was the complainant. Sergeant Tuck said that the accused later told the police he had travelled to the camping ground from Oamaru and had found his wife in a caravan in bed with the com-

B.shop said he "just went mad and now regretted it” FINED FOR ASSAULT A fine of £l5. in default 17 days' imprisonment, was imposed on Donald Alexander McLean McGavin, aged 42. a barman, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of assault on April 4. He was not represented by counsel. Sergeant Tuck said that police went to the accused's home at 37 Saxon street and found the accused and his de facto wife affected by liquor. The couple had had an argument, and the accused alleged the woman was going to attack him with a carving knife and a steel she had taken from a drawer. The accused admitted striking the woman and also kicking her. The woman was bleeding freely from the left ear. McGavin had previous convictions, Sergeant Tuck said REMANDED On a charge of breaking and entering premises at 13 Churchill street, with intent to commit a crime on February 26, Peter Terei. aged 22, was remanded on bail until April 13. Charged with the theft of a transistor radio, valued at £23 10s. on April 2 Reginald Noel Ronald Kennedy, aged 17. was remanded on bail until April 13. Lawrence William Ayres was remanded in custody until April 13 on a charge of burglary at Christchurch on March 6.
LICENCE CANCELLED AND FINED £25 Stopped for the third time in three weeks for having no driver’s licence and no warrant of fitness for his motorcycle. John Matthew Duke, aged 21, a workman, told Constable N. F Pipe that his motor-cycle w as good as the constable’s machine. Constable Pipe said in evidence that the only part of the defendant’s motor-cycle that appeared to be bolted in place was the engine. “It was held together by pieces of wire, and the back brake was operated by pulling a wire.” he said. On charges of having no dr. ‘s licence and no warrant of fitness on March 9, Duke was fined £2 on each; on s: xiilar charges on March 21 he was fined £3 on each; and for the same offences on March 27 he was fined £5 on each.
On a further charge of operating a motor-cycle without lights on March 9, Duke was fined £5. and his driver’s licence was cancelled for 12 months Duke did not appear, and was not represented by counsel LOSS OF LICENCE The excuse that Colin Donald Boyd MacKenzie. aged 17, a workman, gave the police for knocking two girls off their bicycle with his motor-cycle in Strowan road on March 7 was that a moth or a fly must have got in his eye just before the accident, said Sergeant B D. Read. The accident was not reported to the police until 35 hours after it occurred. On a charge of driving without due care and attention. MacKenzie was fined £5 and his diver’s licence was cancelled for three months. For failing to report an accident within 24 hours he was ordered to pay costs, and for driving a class of vehicle not on his licence he was fined £3
MacKenzie pleaded guilty by letter to all charges. OTHER TRAFFIC CASES

Supplying false information: Denys Leslie Atiken, £3 (no front light on motor-cycle. £2, no rear red light, costs). Stopping motor truck without reasonable consideration for other road users: Jan Veyenhoek. costs only (failing to produce drivers licence. £1).

DANGEROUS DRIVING Rex Winston Robinson, a labourer, was convicted and fined £l5. and his driver’s licence was cancelled for 18 months, on a charge of dangerous driving on January 28. Robinson pleaded guilty through Mr M. J. Glue. Traffic Officer J. Clarke said he checked Robinson travelling between Belfast and Cputts Island at speeds up to 65 miles an hour Robinson turned into another road and almost turned the car over. When he stopped he refused to unlock the car and talk to the traffic officer. Mr Glue said that Robinson had been in a considerable amount of trouble W’ith the traffic officers. Robinson had since sold his car. A charge of failing to yield the right of way at a pedestrian crossing on January 17, against Kenneth William Busch, was dismissed. He pleaded not guilty. A charge of exceeding 30 miles an hour. against Reginald Yaxley, was dismissed. He pleaded not guilty, and was represented by Mr B. J. Drake.
