High School Head To Go Overseas Next Week

Mr C. F. S. Caldwell, headmaster of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, will leave next Thursday to spend three months and a half overseas on a Woolf Fisher travelling fellowship. Mr Caldwell will make as thorough a study as possible in the time available of

recent developments in portprimary education in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. He will take special notice of the effects of stepping up school mathematics and science studies in some places, and ascertain whether this can be successfully achieved without undue loss to other work. Television will be another field of investigation. Mr Caldwell wants to assess the effects of television at home on work at school and also the use of the new medium in formal education Already he has an invitation to observe the preparation and production of educational programmes in American studios and then go immediately to see their reception in the schools.

Administration of growing roll numbers and modern

facilities in the classrooms will also be studied. Mr Caldwell, with his wife, will go first to the United States and visit schools and colleges in San Francisco. Los Angeles, St. Louis. Washington. New York, and Boston. Arrangements have been made through the State Department. These visits will take almost a month.

In the United Kingdom, Mr Caldwell will spend a good deal of his six weeks there observing the ‘comprehensive” schools in the London area. He also has invitations tf see a range of independent schools.

For the remaining three or four weeks, Mr and Mrs Caldwell will tour France, "witzerland, and Italy returning to New Zealand by way of Bangkok and Hong* Kong The Christchurch Boys’ High School board of governors expressed good wishes to Mr Caldwell yesterday.

Mr F J. B. Murray has been appointed acting-headmaster in Mr Caldwell's absence
