‘NO VETO’
Comments In Press
LONDON, April 4. The British Government will make its own final decision whether to go into the Common Market and Commonwealth countries will have no right of veto whatever, according to some political commentators.
They say this is the position which can be assumed from answers which the Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) gave in the House of Commons when he was asked about the progress of the Common Market negotiations and the calling of a Commonwealth Prime Ministers' conference to discuss them. Mr Macmillan was under pressure from both sides after his speech at Stockton —in which he emphasised the advantages of British membership of the Common Market—to commit himself to obtain the Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ approval -in advance of any final decision. But in his answers he did not deal directly with this point.
