Cricket BRIDGETOWN TEST

Dour Defence By India (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BRIDGETOWN (Barbados), March 28 India had to show more resolution if it was to stave off defeat against West Indies on the final day of the third test. India, 113 runs behind with eight second innings wickets left, cannot win the game but by forcing a draw could keep the five-match rubber alive. West Indies won the first two tests.

After West Indies had taken its first innings total to 475 In reply to India's 158. the touring team batted just over four hours to reach 104 for two wickets at the close yesterday.

India’s second innings began disastrously with M. Jaisimha trapped leg-before by Stayers before a run was scored.

Sardesai and Rusi Surti took the total to 60 before Stayers dismissed Surti with another lbw decision from a ball which kept low. Surti scored 36 in 135 minutes.

In spite of the wearing wicket, Manjrekar and Sardesai held out to keep alive India’s hopes of saving the match.

Eight bowlers were used to dislodge them, and although it was dreary cricket for the crowd—at one point 14 consecutive maiden overs were bowled—lndia's tactics were the right ones for the grim situation.
