DEVELOPMENT OF AIRPORT

Support For City

Council

Support for the City Council's efforts to have the

Christchurch international airport developed to take pure jets is assured when the South Island Publicity Association holds its conference on Saturday. One of two remits on toe subject proposes that toe council should proceed with the scheme “without further negotiations with toe New Zealand Government."

With the moving of navigation lights involved, the mover of the remit, a private member, will probably be told that the council cannot proceed independently. Whole-hearted support is expected, however, for a remit from the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce urging the Government to take immediate steps to have Christchurch developed as a full international jet airport.

The conference may receive expert advice, as the Mini Ker in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) is to give an address on Saturday morning. The Otago Development Council has sponsored a remit asking the association to use its influence to ensure that air services to smaller centres are maintained.
