“Operation Crowflight”— the high-altitude air-sampling programme conducted by the United States Air Force—will not be based in New Zealand. Advice that a decision had been made to locate the American facilities in Australia has been received by the Civil Aviation Administration in Wellington. Late last November, 13 URA.F officers examined New Zealand airports with a view to the possible estabiishment of permanent facilities from which aircraft could operate on high-alti-tude air-sampling operations Visit* were made by the military team to Christchurch airport, Auckland, and Ohakea. The CA_A learned of the decision from the United States Embassy art Wellington. It said that the recent survey conducted by the USAF, had indicated that because of certain difficulties involving the operation of the U-2 aircraft used, none of the sites considered in NewZealand would be suitable. The U.£A,F. had decided to locate its facilities in Australia. from where the project had been carried on temporarily since 1959.
