ATHLETICS Garrett Impresses In Inter-School Races

Competitors from St. Bede’s College dominated the second session of inter-sec-ondary schools’ preliminary atbeltic sports events at Rugby Park yesterday. The third meeting will be held today, and the qualifiers from all three meetings will meet in the finals on Saturday. R. M. Garrett (Christ’s College) impressed by the ease of his victory in the open 880yds, although it was obvious that the talented Technical College youth, , R. Reekie, could have run a lot faster. Garrett passed Reekie on the back stretch in the second lap, and won by about 15 yards. Reekie took second place narrowly from St. Bede’s R. H. Shaw, who finished as though he thought that only the first two would qualify Shaw must have been relieved to find that in the distance events, unlike sprints and field events, the first three qualified for the finals Msec First Lap Reekie’s school-mate, M. Jones, who had set a fast time for the mile at his own school sports, ran the first lap of the open mile in 61sec But it took so much out of him that he covered second and third laps in 69sec and 71sec, and his final time of tain 30sec did not threaten the listed record of J. Power at tain 26.8 sec. However, this time will surely come under fire again on Saturday. There was little of interest in the other events, with Christ's College and St. Bede’s competitors taking the first two placings in all events except the long jump B. Prebble, of Riccarton High School, returned the only record-breaking performance with his 24.55ec in the junior 220yds. However the listed record of 25.65ec had already been lowered to 24.4®ec on Monday by the Burnside High School competitor, R. Stevenson.

In the intermediate 880yds, R. D. Capper (St Bede’s) was little troubled to win in 2min 11.3 sec, against the record of 2min 11.2 sec held by B. Cattermole (Linwood High School). Disqualified Twice In both the under-14 and intermediate relay events, the St Bede's College teams were disqualified for changing batons outside the correct area.
