BURSARIES AT UNIVERSITY
Wellington Plans Deputation
The Canterbury Univereity Council on Monday was not keen to join a Victoria Universitv Council deputation to the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) to discuss the new bursary regulations. It wanted to know a lot more about the Wellington case it be supporting and it thought it would do better to make any desirable representations on its own account The Wellington invitation specified chiefly the short notice of change in the regulations as the reason for its deputation. Mr T H McCombs said his main immediate concern in this matter was that the regulations were published on December 19. after higher school certificates were granted, but at least 18 Canterbury pupils (who consequently expected boarding bursaries) found themselves disqualified by toe new regulations There should be immediate investigation of these cases. There were more grounds for complaint in this (when pupils bad undertaken courses with a specific end in view) than with other regulations which covered courses not then embarked upon The ohanceMor (Mr C H Perkins) said he would like to know al Ithe issues likely to be involved in the Wellington deputation. Those representations might differ from Canterbury views There were, for instance, cases of hardship among students who had designedly taken longer over courses then allowed under the new bursary regulations.
The whole question was referred to the executive which will report back to the council through the academic committee. Authority was given for the executive to act on any issue which was urgent.
