TAKANINI WORK

Pipe Dream Does Best "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, March 27. Pipe Dream has the Sapling Stokes ait Avondale on Saturday made to order for him and his hold on the event seemed tighter than ever after the training work at Takannni this morning.

Allowed to stretch out on the No. 2 grass, Pipe Dream ran a fine five furlongs. At the same time he easily beat his useful two-year-old stablemate, Pow Wow. Catonia and Winnipeg II indicated that they were none the worse for racing at Trentham when they ran five furlongs. So did Persian Star. Wheeler, a visitor from Patumahoe, dashed off half a mile brilliantly. The going was cutting out on the surface.

Pipe Dream (Hughes) gave Pow Wow (Andrews) a fair start and in spite of going wide finished the better by four or five lengths over five furlongs in Imin 2sec. Under the conditions of the race Pipe Dream could not be given more than 9-0 in the Sapling Stakes and that is 91b less than he won with at Pukekphe, Catonia (Hughes) had a slight lead on Winnipeg H (Holland) after running five furlongs in Imin 1 4-ssec. They worked early before the ground became broken. Finished Easily

About the same time Faircourt (Johnston) and Prince Manu (Coles) ran half a mile in 49 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 37 3~ssec. Prince Manu finished well within himself, allowing Faircourt a neck or so. Wheeler (Andrews) gathered speed fast and finished half a mile in 49 2-ssec. In the first half she showed speed and for the first two furlongs she was timed to go 22 2-ssec over the quickest part of the course. It was a most impressive display of pace. Wheeler may not beat Corador in the Titirangi Handicap but she looks certain to run him close.

Persian Star (Hughes) went from the seven furlongs and ran the last six in imin 16 3-ssec. Wizo (Ryan) ran well clear of Old Salt (Jury) toward the finish of a mile in Imin 49 2-ssec, the last half in 53sec. Old Salt worked lazily. He is unlikely now to start in the Foley Handicap, an event for which both Persian Star and Wizo are acceptors.

Higgins To Ride Grand Print

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 27. R. Higgins will ride Grand Print in the £10,600 Invitation Cup at Randwick on April 14 and in the £10,500 Sydney Cup on April 23. The rider for Grand Print has been in doubt as Higgins refused the mount on Saturday to ride Aquanita in the Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley, and won. G. Moore was interested in the Sydney Cup mount on Grand Print—but in no other race.

Last night G'rand Print’s trainer, J, Besanko, said Higgins would ride him in his two races in Sydney—the Invitation Cup and the Sydney Cup. After that Grand Print would come back to Melbourne to spell before getting ready for next spring. Grand Print has become equal favourite with Lord Fury for the Sydney Cup after his fast-finishing fourth behind Aquanita in the Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
