New Committees To Be Formed
Nominations by local bodies for three of the five seats on the new Canterbury Licensing Committee will close on April 1, and an election will be necessary. The committee, which will deal with liquor licensing matters defined in the Licetssing Amendment Act, 1961, is one of 22 set up by that act. replacing 54 which existed previously. Under the act the members are to be elected at a meeting of local body representatives on May 1. Five nominations have already been received for the three seats The chairman of the committee will be a magistrate to be appointed by the Gov-ernor-General on the recommendation of the Minister of Justice, and the fifth member will be Cr W E Olds, who has been appointed by the Christchurch City Council as the controlling local authority The city's nomination is automatic.
The Canterbury district, which at present has three licensing committeees, will comprise the counties of Waimairi. Selwyn. Malvern, Paparua, Heathcote, Mount Albert, Springs, Akaroa. Wairewa, Tawera. Ellesmere Hatewell and part of the Ashburton county not included in the Ashburton Licensing Trust district
It also includes boroughs surrounded by or contiguous to the counties mentioned.
At the election meeting on May I, each local body will be entitled to send one representative to vote
The act stimulates that nominations for four committees auk be made within three months of the threeyearly local body elections Other committees to be formed include Hurunui—the Amun, Cheviot. Waipara. Ashley, Kowai. Oxford. Rangiora, and Eyre counties—and South Canterbury—Mackenzie. Levels, Waimate, Waitakl a xi Geraldine counties, excluding parts in the Geraldine and Oamaru licensing trust districts.
