RACING AWAPUNI TRIALS

Youngsters Impress

“The Press" Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH, _ March 27. Two-year-olds engaged in the Stonyhurst Handicap at Awapuni on Saturday were responsible for some of the best trials today, when semi-final gallops were held in perfect conditions. Honours over half a mile were shared between Orokawa Clear Away and Fine Time, while For Free also galloped well. The Awapuni Gold Cup candidates, Lord Sasanof and Disorder, both impressed when running seven furlongs, although their time was not fast. Doradeb easily beat Apa over six furlongs in fast time and others to please Included Bagush, Don Palatine, Purserette. Outcome, Hebrides. Northwestern, Blue Tattoo and No. 1 grass. Orokawa (Miss Lee) ana Clear Way, (Lewis) seemed well matched at the end of half a mile in 49 3-ssec, the last three in 36 l-ssec. It was a smart effort, and they finished in line. Orokawa has done well since Trentham, and his inside draw is to his advantage. Clear away is a well-bred filly by Le Fllou from Te Hlnemoa. She is one of the most promising youngsters here, but has drawn wide in the Stonyhurst Handicap, her first start. For all that she could still go well.

Big Impression Another Stonyhurst runner. Fine Time (Mullane) made a big Impression to beat D Day (Dombroski) by two lengths over half a mile in 49}sec, the last three in 36Jsec. Fine Time is a promising filly from S. McGreal s stable, but she has drawn badly on Saturday. D Day seemed to work lazily, but he looks well and should be a good prospect in the Longburn Handicap. Prince Monolulu (O’Neill) got to the end of half a mile in Slsec, and did not seem to go as fast as usual. He was disappointing in the first day sprint and failed to show his usual dash. He will get another chance this week in the TamaUte Handicap. Plantation (O’Neill) had Benz (Mahoney) comfortably covered after travelling over half a mile m 50sec the last three in 36 J-Ssec. tn spite of a wide draw. Plantation could be a winning prospect in the Stonyhurst Handicap. He is a very promising colt.

Northwestern (Hulme) ran freely over half a mile in 50 2-3 sec, the last three in 38 4-ssec. He came home strongly and has form to recommend him for the Longburn Handicap. Firm ground will suit him.

Lord Sasanof (Wyatt) and Disorder (Dombroski) were well matched all the way over seven furlongs in Imin 35>,4sec, the last three in 38 l-ssec. They went quietly in the early part and only had pace on from the three. Both horses made a good impression, especially Disorder, which seems improved with his first day race. They will add interest to the Awapuni Gold Cup. laorana (Hulme) left six furlongs behind in Imin 17 4-3 sec, the last three in 38sec. She did her work in pleasing style. Doradeb (Mahoney) impressed when she cleared out to beat Apa (Hodren) easily at the end oi a fast six furlongs in imin 16 3-ssec, the last three in 39sec. Doradeb was disappointing on Saturday, but there was nothing wrong with this gallop and she will have to be given another chance in the Tamatete Handicap. Apa took no interest In the task over the final part, but that is often the way with him in training. He looks well and could be a big danger in the first leg on Saturday. L. K. Tinsley will ride him. Hebrides (Whiteman) beat Sampler (Mullane) by two lengths over five furlongs in Imin 3sec, the last three in 37)sec. Hebrides is near his best but needs soft ground. He is awaiting re-entry to the Woodhey Hack Handicap. Sampler, just beaten at Hastings, is in the same race, but has drawn badly. On The Plough

On the plough. Bagush (Foster) was going very easily alongside Flockhart (Lewis) after running an easy mile in Imin 51sec, the last three in 41sec and the first three in 42 3-5 sec. Bagush worked most impressively and should leave hack ranks on a winning note when he contests the Te Matai Hack Handicap. Flockhart has done well since running second at Woodville and is a highweight prospect on Saturday. Don Palatine (Mahoney) hit out really well io run half a mile tn 52 4-ssec, the last three in 39 l-ssec. He is an impressive looking galloper and must be hard to beat in the Longburn Handicap on Saturday. Outcome (Hulme) and Musick (Stratton), both acceptors in the Tamatete Handicap, were well matched when they completed : seven furlongs in Imin 34 3-ssec, the last three in 40 3-Ssec. Outcome has thrived since Trentham and must be hard to beat this week.
