BEQUEST TO FOUNDATION

Estate Worth Over £50,000 (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 27. The first bequest to the Maori Education Foundation was announced today. A former New Zealander and his wife, now residents of California, have willed their estate to the foundation. It is estimated the estate will be worth between 150.000 and 200.000 dollars, and it wall qualify for the New Zealand Government’s £1 for £1 subsidy. The couple wish, to the meantime, to remain arnonymous, and the bequest was announced on their behalf by the chairman of the board of trustees of the foundation, Mr D. G. Ball. Only one condition was attached to the bequest, said Mr Ball That was that a scholarship should be provided to be held by a Maori in the United States. “The final value of the bequest to the foundation will be at the least £lOO.OOO and probably a great deal more.” said Mr Ball. “And it is greatly to be hoped that other New Zealanders will be moved to similar action.” Sir Eruera Tirikatene said tonight that he had accepted, on behalf of the foundation trustees, an offer from Mr R. J. Kerridge for film premieres to be arranged in each of the four main centres, the proceeds to go to the foundation. The premieres will be presented within the next three months.
