Extra Funds Provincial

Renovation of the masonry in the Canterbury Provincial Council buildings has revealed that the deterioration of the stone is worse than the first investigations showed. The Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings Board, which administers and maintains thi. group of stone and timber buildings, is awaiting the results of its application to the Government for an extra £3OOO to pay for repairs.

The current repair work is costing £13,000, but the removal of outer stones has exposed damage done to interior masonry by water. These were probably good stones until recently but the action of water seeping past the decayed outer Oamaru stone of the facings has required their replacement. The board may hear this week of the Government’s decision on additional funds for the work.
