Quartet Applications From Overseas
The University of Canterbury has had a pleasing response to its call for applications to form a string quartet within the music department.
Six established quartets have applied and there are also about a dozen applications from smaller groups and individuals who are interested in the possibility that a quartet may be built up from unattached players. The applications come from within New Zealand and from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It is believed that the range gives assurance that the university will get “a good quartet." The extent of overseas applications will mean that there wil] be some delay in the appointment of the quartet. Auditions, interviews, and independent reports will have to be arranged. Because the applicants are scattered this will take time. The university has offered a salary of £llOO a year for each member of the quartet plus virtually assured prospects of further remunera-
tion from outside activities These might include places in Christchurch orchestras and ensembles, and broadcajting engagements.
