Import Licensing Holds Up Hospital Supplies
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, March 20. Urgently needed surgical instruments, anaesthetics, and bottle stoppers are being imported by the Auckland Hospital Board even though it has no import licences for them. The board will argue later
if necessary with the Customs and Health Departments over licences for the items. “We simply must have these things,” the chairman (Mr T. H. Caughey) said today. Instructions to order the items were confirmed when the board last night approved a finance and purchasing committee recommendation on shortages of essential goods. The board will meanwhile make fresh approach to the Customs Department for licences and will advise the Health Department of its action.
Licence applications "through normal channels” had faded to get results, even after six months’ wait, the board’s supply officer told the committee in a report. The items urgently needed would cost £2085, he said. The board will continue to press for defined Government policy on maintaining hospital supplies.
