EFFECT OF E.E.C.
N.Z. Will Have Time To Adjust (N.Z.P.A-Reuter—Copyright> LONDON, March 20. New Zealand would probably have some time to adjust if Britain joined the European Common Market, the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, Mr T. L. Macdonald, said tonight. In a speech to the National Liberal Forum, he reaffirmed New Zealand concern for adequate safeguards if Britain joined the Six. He said it was very plain that unless the agreed terms were satisfactory the implications would be very serious for New Zealand. “But.” he said, “any thought that Britain might be turning away from the Commonwealth is difficult to grasp. "It is probable, however, that if Britain joined, her entry would be a gradual transition so that New Zealand would have some time to adjust herself." Even if Britain did not join. New Zealand would still have problems. Mr Macdonald said. British agricultural production bad increased enormously since the war. and consequently New Zealand was having to seek new markets Her mutton was having a ready sale in Japan.
