Restriction On Accountants (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Mar. 21. Land agency and Totalisator Agency Board positions will in future be banned for members of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. At a stormy annual general meeting of the society at New’ Plymouth tonight motions banning members from the two positions were carried.
Frequent reference to the “snobbish” attitude of the society’s executive council was made by delegates who opposed the motions. However, members at present occupying positions with the T.A.B. and those carrying out the business of land agents will be able to retain their society membership status.
Mr J. H. Pickles (Christchurch) said the council had only agreed to allow members to act as agents for the board during its early years when fully trained personnel were not available.
Delegates made frequent reference to the “inconsistent” attitude of the council and its “attempts to defeat democracy.” The motion regarding T.A.B. work was defeated on the voices, but a poll which included a large number of proxy votes carried the motion by a wide margin. The land agency motion was discussed with some heat before this, too, was carried.
