TUNNEL IN ALPS
Switzerland To Italy (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, March 21. A small charge of dynamite, which Is to be detonated on April 5 will blast away the barrier between Italy and Switzerland, and open a tunnel linking the two countries, says the “Daily Mirror’s’’ Rome correspondent. The barrier is in the heart of a mountain below the famous St. Bernard Pass, Only a few yards separate the Swiss miners on one side and the Italians on the other. The Italians have already been able to pour Chianti through a plastic tube connecting the two galleries in return for Swiss wine. Roads between the two countries are normally blocked for more than half the year by snow on the mountain passes, and motorists have had to take cars across the border by train at a minimum cost of £2.
When the new tunnel opens next year, charges will range from 3s to 26s for various types of vehicles plus 3s for each passenger. The tunnel will have a four mile double highway on which over-taking will be forbidden. There will also be a pedestrian pavement. The tunnel will carry a pipeline to pump crude oil from the Italian port of Genoa to several Western European countries for refining.
