Lawn Tennis PRIVATE TOUR
Miss Smith’s Plans
tN-Z. Press Assn,—Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 20.
The Margaret Smith case, which has stirred the Australian tennis world for several weeks, is not over yet, according to a report in the “Melbourne Herald” today. Last night the council of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia accepted the withdrawal of Miss Smith, aged 19, from this year’s Australian overseas touring women’s team, and decided to send the team without her. Miss Smith has said she will make a privately-financed tour.
The “Herald’s” report today said the L.TAA. probably would move at its meeting next month for further disciplinary powers over players who withdrew from official teams —and it could affect Miss Smith’s private tour
The paper’s report said this was foreshadowed in a statement today by the L.T.A.A. president Mr Norman Strange, after last night’s meeting.
"If she makes an application for a private tour and/or the L.T.A.A. becomes, aware of her intention to go on a sponsored tour, consideration will be given to the implications as they may affect the welfare of our official team. We have several angles in mind, but I can’t say what they are.” Mr Strange said. The “Herald” reported one top official had said the L.T.A A.’s attitude was not vindictive against Miss Smith Miss Smith withdrew from the official team because, she said, she could not “get on” with its manageress, Mrs Neß Hopman,
