The hot favourites, Scotland, were held to a 3-3 draw by England in th Calcutta Cup Rugby Union international at Murrayfleld today Desperate defence by England kept the Scots out and foiled their attempts to score their first Calcutta win for 12 years and their first triple crown success since 1938
With victories over Wales and Ireland behind them, Scotland were strong favourites to win, England were handicapped by the late withdrawal of the fly-half, R. Sharp, with influenza. But their pack rose to the occasion, [flaying by far their best match thia season.
The success of the forwards appeared to ripple its way through to the English backs. The scrum-half and captain, R. Jeeps, gave a great display of courage and defiance in his last home match for England. He is retiring after the British Lions' tour of South Africa.
Scotland, however, should have won. If the full-back. K. Scotland, had been in Jacking form they would have done so handsomely After J. Willcox had kicked a twenty-fifth minute penalty goal for England from 50 yards K. Scotland landed a fine equalising penalty just on half-time.
