PLASTERERS’ AWARD

Minimum Wage Increased

An increase of 8s 4d a week in She minimum wage of plasterers is granted in a new award issued last week by the Court of Arbitration. The wage increase is retrospective to February 22. and brings the minimum wage to £l4 6s 8d a week

This wage is paid after a a worker has spent a week in employment with any one employer. For the first week, the worker is paid at the the rate of 7s 2d an hour, an increase of 2id an hour on the old award. A worker in charge of three or more journeymen is now paid an extra 5s a day, instead of 4s 6d as under the old award. Workers supplying their own tools and overalls will be paid an allowance of 5s 6d a week, an increase of 6d. The new award contains an unqualified union membership preference clause, which says: ‘‘Any adult person employed in any position subject to this award by any employer bound by the award shall, if he is not already a member of a union of workers bound by this award, become a member of such union within seven days after his engagement

. . . and shall remain a member so long as he continues in any position subject to this award.” The new award continues in force until August 31, 1963.
