NEW DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES
N.Z.R. Win Soon Have 129 IN Z Press Association > WELLINGTON, March 19. With the arrival of the 10 new “DA” class locomotives from Canada this year. New Zealand Railways will have a fleet of 129 powerful diesels for main-line service. The locomotives have been ordered from General Motors. Diesel, Ltd., Canada, for New Zealand Railways at a cost of £650,000, including freight to New Zealand. The Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) said today that the new locomotives of the 1425 h.p. “DA” class, would enable an additional 500,000 train miles or more, each year, to be worked by diesel locomotives. The tender of General Motors, Diesel, Ltd., was the lowest of three received and gave the best delivery. All 10 locomotives are expected to be in service by the next busy season.
