Mr W. L. Middlemass, the New Zealand Trade Commissioner in Malaya, left Christchurch yesterday for Melbourne on his way back to Kuala Lumpur. Mr Middlemass has spent two months and a half in New Zealand meeting manufacturers, exporters and other business organisations and visiting factories on a familiarisation tour.

The Secretary for Industries and Commerce (Dr. W B. Sutch) yesterday afternoon addressed the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers Association on the import licensing schedule after opening the annual conference of the Meat Retailers Federation in Christchurch. Dr. Sutch will return to Wellington this morning.

Dr. D. Plester, an outstanding German specialist in ear surgery, will visit Dunedin next month at the invitation of the University of Otago Medical School and the British Medical Association. Approval has been given for Dr. Plester to carry out speciai ear operations as demonstrations during a post-graduate course in the surgery of deafness to be held from April 9 to 13.—(PA.)
