Lawn Tennis Canterbury Beats South Canterbury
Although the Canterbury lawn tennis team was without several of its top players, it had a convincing 22-2 win, at Maori Park, Timaru, yesterday, against South Canterbury.
R. Watson, playing fourth for Canterbury, lost in a close three-set match to the experienced E. R. Shrimpton. and B. J. Shirlaw and Mrs E. Campbell lost the second mixed double.
The top men, L. J. Walpole (Canterbury) and P. Angland had a hard three-set battle. Angland was in fine form in the first set, and scored several points down the lines with his topspun backhand. He won this set, 6-2. Walpole led 4-0 in the second set when Angland won his own service and Walpole’s to trial, 2-4. Walpole then won the next two games to take the set 6-2.
The third set was a long, even contest where fortunes fluctuated. Walpole lead 5-4 and was behind at 6-7. He took the deciding set, 10-8. Miss K. Williams, playing top for Canterbury, had another long match with Mrs M. Annear. formerly Miss M Olliver. Both players stayed on the baseline and played to each other's backhands. Mrs Annear has a very strong forehand drive and used this to advantage. In the second set Miss Williams went to the net on occasions but Mrs Annear lobbed to the baseline. Miss Williams lost many points by smashing into the net or over the baseline. In the deciding set Mrs Annear tired and was not getting to the ball very quickly, which allowed Miss Williams to take the set, 6-4
All the other Canterbury women had comfortable straight-set wins, except Miss H. Blick, playing sixth, who won 6-2 in the third set from Miss R. Jones.
