Late Finish To Annual Show At Hawarden On Saturday

So late did the jumping events run at the Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association s annual show on Saturday that the last event was run off in the halflight, and it was dark as the winners lined up to receive their ribbons from the judge.

The late finish, and consequent confusion over the results, marred an otherwise successful show, held in brilliantly sunny weather, and attended by a big crowd. The gate takings were £99 8s 6d, compared with £99 3s 8d last year.

Heavy entries in all the jumping events contributed to the late running of the programme, although it appeared that the grand parade of horses could have been shortened, since time was running out. For the ponies, there were two Olympic jumps, and two other jumps, which drew up to 22 entries. For the hunters, there were two F.E.I. jumps, and four other events, which drew up to 19 entries.

There were also heavy entr.es in toe sheep show, about 500 toeep being exhibited The Hawarden district is the home of the Corn edale, and this breed alone drew 155 entries from 10 exhibitors, with consistently up to 14, 15 and 16 entries a class. Wito the big entry, the judging ot tne Corriedale rams was no: completed until after 1 pjn„ and the judging of toe ewes until 2 pm. The display of hacks and saddle ponies was also a feature of the show, so that the grand parade of horses late in the afternoon provided a fine sight. The parade was led by toe St. Andrew’s College Pipe Band, and toe horses led by the champion hack. Mrs E. G Rutherford's dapple grey. Blue Smoke, followed by the reserve champion, MiiS P Austin’s Tamasese. The fine weather, an attractive, spacious, and wellgrassed ground, and strong entries made for “a thoroughly enjoyable show, and a very, very pleasant day out,” in the words of Mr H L Pickering, member of Parliament for Hurunui, who addressed die crowd after the grand parade and congratulated exhibitors upon a fine display of horses and sheep. Corriedale Sheep Tne general standard of the Corriedale rams on snow was high, said the judge. Mr A. H. Kennington (Seddon). They were well up to the standard he had seen when he judged at Hawarden several years ago The general conformation and type of the rams was good, but some sheep were standing over on their hocks, a fault that could be improved, he said. The champion ram. shown by the estate H. C. A. Sidey. was the best-balanced and beatwalking ram in the section, said Mr Kennington. It had a good head, and its wool, although showing a little age. was still good. The reserve champion ram. shown by the D. S. Johns Trust, was a wellheaded and well-woolled sheep, but was not quite as good as the champion in the hindquarters. The champion and other prizewinning rams should give a good account of themselves at tne Christchurcii Centennial Show this year, if entered, Mr Kennington said. "The Corriedale ewes were well up to the high standard of previous Hawarden shows.” 5-aid the judges. Mr W Overton (Scargill) and Mr P. Carr • Waikaril. *’A lot of them were well up to metropolitan standard.” they said. Considering the difficult season—a wet winter, followed by a very dry summer—the ewes were well brought out. The champion ewe. shown by J F G Blakely, was a sheep of fine conformation and carnage. with very fine, soft-hand-ling wool, said Mr Overton The reserve champion ewe of O G Evans was an old ewe. but still showing her quabty Half bred and Merino Good entries, a good general quality of sheep, and strong competition among four exhibitors marked the halfbred ‘ection, said the judge, Mr C. V. Denton (Domett) “The champion ram. a two-tooth sieep, was very’ good, and should develop into a really good sheep.” he said “The champion ewe was a good representation of the halfbred sheep." There was only a small entry’ of four Merino sheep from one exhibitor, and without a standard of comparison, he feh he could not comment on this section. the judge said The Romneys, a breed now becoming more prominent in the Hawarden district with the development of aerial topdressing on the hills, were of a very high standard for a country show, with good competition. said the judge Mr L. E Taylor (Oxford). But breeders must pay particular attention to the teeth of their sheep —many sheep on show had teeth either over-shot or under-shot, he said “Several sheep were also marked down for weakness in the back wool, and being too woolly on the heads," Mr Taylor said. "The champion ram was a good specimen of the Romney, with good bone, good carcase, and good wool,” said Mr Taylor. “The champion ewe. a two-tooth, was a bold, upstanding sheep with good bone and good fleece, and with a good open head." In the flock sheep farmers breeding ewe classes, the class for five Corriedale or halfbred ewes brought forward a fine lot of sheep, said the judge. Mr W. Dampier-Crossley (Parnassus). Tlie winning pen, from seven entries, shown by R. B K el lock. was a beautifully - matched line of Corriedale ewes, ui th go<xj Corriedale fleeces, he said. The class for a pair of one-shear eves was another lot of very good sheen and it was much to the credit of R. B Kellock that he should again take first prize, and also second prize, against nine other entries Hacks And Hunters The hacks were we!) turned out. said the iudee. Mr D

Orbed (bevels), but he was a little disappointed with the horses’ manners. “A hack should be ridden for pleasure, and this demands a well-man-nered horse, but owners are inclined to lose sight of the manners of their horses," he said. "The champion hack, Mrs E G. Rutherford’s Blue Smoke, would at present hold his own tn any show ring tn New Zealand, but even the manners of this horse were inclined to let him down a bit," said Mr Orbell. Of the hunter classes, Mr Orbell said that, in general, the horses shown at Hawarden would hold their own in any South Island show ring. Their jumping was also of good standard, he said. "In the open hunter event. Miss A. Wright’s Highwayman gave a very good performance, and was champion hunter." said Mr Orbell. "The reserve champion, Mrs P. H. Crean’s Delight, won the lightweight hunter event, but was unlucky to put in one bad jump in the open event. A lot of the riders unbalanced their horses approaching a jump.” CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS Horses Hack.—Mrs E. G. Rutherford’s Blue Smoke; reserve. Miss P. Austin's Tamasese. Hunter.—Miss A.
