Third Place In 880 Heat

Philpott, finished third in yesterday's heat of the 440 yards a.t the Australian athletic championships (at the Sydney Athletic Field. Philpott was beaten in his heat by the Queenslander, M Malouf, who ran 48.4 sec Philpott’s time was 48.9 sec. He should be prominent in the 880 yards championship tomorrow night, in which he has drawn an easy heat. The Victorian, G. Holdsworth, came back to win the Australian 100 yards championship, his second successive title, in 9 6sec He narrowly beat the top two challengers, P Vassella and M. Cleary, by inches. Cleary last year played for Australia in Rugby Union tests against Fiji and South Africa. He is tipped to represent Australia against the English side later this year, now that he has switched to Rugby League. The Commonwealth Games six miles and marathon champion, D. Power, expects to retain both titles in the Perth Games in November after a good win in the six miles event yesterday Power did not exert himself until the last threequarter mile, which he covered in 3min lOsec. Power said he felt he was running better than ever.
