The Government is advertising in America for a senior biologist experienced in tuna research, the Minister of Marine (Mr Gerard) announced today. He said this would take the Government’s tuna fishing research programme a step further.

The selected applicant will join the Marine Department's fisheries research staff. Mr Gerard said the results of recent commercial tuna fishing were sufficiently promising to suggest that an industry might be developed.

The Government was at present examining proposals to institute exploratory and biological work aimed at assisting the industry's efficient and orderly development. Mr Gerard said the Government had written to all American establishment’s specialising in tuna research with a view to employing a biologist for up to three years in charge of this research in New Zealand The position would offer an opportunity for an experienced senior scientist to further his studies and develop a research programme on a relatively new fishery in an attractive environment, Mr Gerard said.
