Gretel, Australia’s challenger for the America’s Cup. was beaten by two lengths in the first off-shore match against the American yacht. Vim. on Sunday Earlier in the day. Gretel beat the United States 12-metre yacht in a short turn on Sydney Harbour. It was the first time the yachts had met, and was the beginning of a series of matched races to prove the worth of the newly-built challenger. In the harbour match of about two miles, Gretel wo.i by 150 yards. Later, over a six-mile course off-shore, Vim crossed the line about two lengths ahead. Iri the off-shore match. Gretel suffered winch troubles causing the loss of about one minute.

Officials said the try-out was very limited and inconclusive except to prove that Gretel sails well and could be as good as Vim—or even better. They said Gretel was pointing higher than Vim in the harbour race.

During the vests, the challenger was skippered by A Roberts, a contender' for the helm in the cup series in September.
